Tutorial 3: Creating Large Size Perforated Pattern

2. Determining the effective size of perforated pattern panel layout

To determine the effective overall perforated pattern size, we need to consider the sheet border of each sheet. The minimum theoretical distance for the border is the largest diameter of the selected punch tools. For example, if you use 20mm diameter punch tool as the largest tool, the border will be 20mm ideally for all the four edge. However, we also need to consider the space/gap for the clamps to avoid dead center area (assuming that we use CNC turret punch machine instead of CNC laser cut machine).

In the case of this tutorial, the border will be 30mm for all around the edges. Thus the total effective area of the façade will be 8904mm x 5795mm. These figures are calculated by subtracting the border gap for all the sheets in both directions.

A point to remember that the smaller the border gap the less apparent the joints /seams between the perforated panels will be. Thus this will give smoother effect of the image reflected on the perforated pattern for your façade.
